United Democratic Party preparing to take legal action to have Collet Montejo removed as a Senator

By Benjamin Flowers: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is preparing to take legal action to have People’s United Party (PUP) Senator Collet Montejo removed from the Senate.

UDP Party Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow maintains that Montejo must vacate his seat at the senate because he is constitutionally disqualified from holding his seat as a supervisor on the Redistricting Taskforce. He explained that Section 63 (1) of the Constitution of Belize bars members of the national assembly from holding a seat while in a position of responsibility for or in connection with any elections, and that Section 64 (2) says that in such a case a Senator must vacate his seat.

“Responsible for elections, to me, means being field supervisor for the redistricting taskforce,” Barrow said. “It will have an impact on the electoral register, because there might have to be a whole new register, if a new constituency is formed.”

Back in July, Party Chairman Michael Peyrefitte had written to the Governor General, H.E. Damne Froyla Tzalam, raising the issue of Montejo holding both positions. Barrow said that the decision to take legal action was the next step in the process.

“We wrote to the Governor General but there was no response, so now we prepare for legal action,” Barrow said.
