By Aaron Humes: Lyndon Donovan Requeña, 40, of Mile 27 ½ Philip Goldson Highway, Biscayne Village, Belize District, has been remanded at the suggestion of police and with his own acquiescence to Central Prison, on a charge of arson.

In court, no plea was taken from Requeña, who next returns to court on November 1.

Requeña is accused of setting on fire, without lawful excuse, the wooden house occupied by his partner the complainant, on September 17, and in court further admitted that he was in breach of a protection order from the Belize Family Court after being released on bail, while also being out on bail for an unrelated burglary charge.

The father of two admits to breaching at least three orders from the Family Court, which was a key reason for the court prosecutor’s objection to bail for an otherwise bailable offense. He conceded that after 14 years of marriage to the complainant, he has been accused multiple times of domestic abuse – but claims he has never gotten a chance to tell his side of the story.

The court prosecutor also indicated that the alleged arson caused injury to the complainant’s eyes and that as a result, pending a medical report, Requeña could face further charges. Additionally, he claimed there is a clear risk of re-offense due to the underlying domestic issue.

For his part, Requeña told the court that he feels he has been mentally abused during the court process and that he feels he is going into depression. In reply, the Magistrate made it a part of her order that he gets intervention in the form of counselling while on remand. While bail is denied in this first instance, Requeña, who did not have legal representation, can seek bail at the Supreme Court.

The complainant reported that on Saturday morning at the residence there was a physical assault and various injuries inflicted on her allegedly by Requeña, and that moments later, after she had seen him leave the premises, the house became engulfed in flames.
