Moses “Shyne” Barrow: Belizeans must claim promises of Independence

By Aaron Humes: The Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow has said “supernatural effort” is needed to plot the course of the next 41 years, which he charged “must be better in every way, for everyone.”

Barrow paid tribute to heroes of the past such as George Price and Philip Goldson who put themselves on the line for Belize’s self-determination.

But it has become a “sham”, he charged, a “neo-colonialism” fostered by local masters who aped their British forebears in stripping the country of its resources in broad daylight.

But in a new era, we need not fear being incarcerated as Goldson and Price and Richardson were, and a majority youth population will demand the Government get its job done so that September 21 can be truly celebrated.

Barrow charged that both major political parties have failed thus far to develop the true promise of Independence – opportunities for the few, not the many, who must march toward a promise that they feel may never come.

The current government is “not trying” as Price, Manuel Esquivel and Dean Barrow did, according to Barrow. As the country struggled through COVID and other ills, the current Government has been content to blame the past administration. Now, with higher cost of living due to higher prices worldwide, a “blue virus” continues to strangle the middle class and starve the working class. This he said, is not the promise of Independence, except for the politically connected.

Without social safety nets and control of inflation, the PUP have left Belizeans on their own – yet, there have been rewards to their favored few.

Soon the “blue virus” will be over, but the PUP have been unable to avoid the temptation of corruption, and contrary to their socialist leanings, there has been nothing for the most productive parts of society, Barrow contended, citing examples.
