By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Eight people lost their lives in Puerto Rico as Hurricane Fiona lashed through the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, CNBC reports.
Fiona made landfall in Puerto Rico on Sunday and caused devastating flooding.
The storm then made its way through the Dominican Republic and the Turks and Caicos Islands before heading toward Bermuda.
Fiona is forecast to reach Canada’s Atlantic coast by tomorrow.
Fiona is now a powerful category 4 Hurricane taking high surf, storm surges, heavy rainfall, and powerful winds.
Authorities in Puerto Rico say that about 40% of the island’s 3.3 million residents were without water and most of the nation had no power.
On Wednesday, U.S. President Joe Biden approved a disaster declaration for Puerto Rico, which makes federal funding available for individuals affected by the storm, the White House said in a statement.
