Police: “Massive crowds at Macal River Park made fatal altercation of Matthew Smith difficult to spot”

Posted: Thursday, September 22, 2022. 3:06 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Police say that the fatal stabbing that took place in San Ignacio yesterday, did not stem from a failure of the department to ensure that the event had security.

ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, head of communications for the office of the Commissioner of Police, said that the incident that claimed the life of 29-year-old Matthew Smith, happened at the Macal River Park where many officers were deployed to assist with keeping the peace.

Yearwood said that there was a fight that ended in the stabbing, which was the result of another fight that occurred the day before.

“I must state that we had in excess of 30 officers working in the park for this event, but the magnitude of that crowd in that park may have contributed to officers not seeing when the actual fight took place,” Yearwood said.

Investigators were called out to where Smith collapsed after the fight, around 7:10 p.m.

Several people have been detained as police investigations continue.
