By Aaron Humes: An official biography of National Hero Philip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson has been launched this morning at the House of Culture in Belize City.

The title comes from his most famous quotation: Mr. Goldson said that when he was in a hotel lobby in Miami, he saw a Cuban shedding tear and she said something to the effect that, “I wish we had done something to save our country…”, according to a 2010 Amandala article.

Biographer and former Chief Librarian Lawrence Vernon says he never knew the great man personally, but accepted beginning in 2016 an invitation to write the work from the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH).

Vernon’s chief theme is the dogged determination of Goldson to bring Belize to Independence – and the curious circumstance of his spending most of the rest of his life in official opposition to the People’s United Party of which he was a founding member. But on the occasion of his going to jail for sedition in 1951, he echoed Antonio Soberanis’ classic phrase, “I would rather be a dead hero than a living coward,” by saying, “I would rather go to jail or be dead than be muzzled.”

The former attorney, newspaperman, and Government Minister made national self-determination and elimination of the Anglo-Guatemalan claim the leading quest of his life, including being the first to address the United Nations on the issue at the time of the Thirteen Proposals, and called for a National referendum to support any proposed settlement of the claim.
