Gulf of Mexico at threat for potential hurricane

Posted: Friday, September 23, 2022. 9:18 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Tropical depression 9 formed this morning in the central Caribbean and forecasters say that it will strengthen to a hurricane by the weekend.

TD9 is likely to become Tropical Storm Hermine and then strengthen to a hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico by early next week.

TD9 has sustained winds of 35 mph and is located about 615 miles east-southeast of Jamaica, tracking west-northwest at 13 mph.

“Only slow intensification is forecast over the next day or so, followed by more significant intensification over the weekend and early next week,” the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Tropical Depression 9 is forecast to throw heavy rain to Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, northern Venezuela and northern Colombia which could lead to flash flooding and mudslides across the islands.

The system is then forecast to gain strength, intensifying into a tropical storm as it tracks toward Jamaica and the Cayman islands.

Tropical storm watches and warnings are likely to be issued for these locations within the next 24 hours.
