Leader of the Opposition: “It’s time to move beyond the monarch”

Posted: Friday, September 23, 2022. 9:55 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: There have been ongoing discussions among Commonwealth Nations about removing The Queen as their head of state following Queen Elizabeth’s death.

In Belize, Leader of the Opposition, Shyne Barrow said that it is time to move beyond the monarch.

“As many of the government ministers have expressed such, I gotta commend the Minister of Education for using his platform on the Battle of St. George’s Caye Day stage to talk about the horrors of colonial life, colonialism, colonization. I see many nations calling for the crown of England to return all of the diamonds and all of the jewelry that they stole from these nations that they colonized,” Barrow stated.

In addition, Barrow declared that the “delusional romanticization” (of the monarch) by some people is unfortunate.

“But for me, there is no question, I have no fond memories of colonialism. Certainly, I believe many parts of Belize still suffer from colonialism.  Certain ethnic groups in Belize suffer more than others because of colonialism.  People will never get the government that they deserve in Belize because of colonialism,” Barrow added.

Barrow said that it is a “nightmare that some people just refuse to let it end.”

Several Caribbean countries have signaled that they intend to remove the monarch as their head of state and become republics.
