Nancy Marin: “[UDP’s] self-destruction is dangerous for [Belizean] democracy”

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Leader of the Belize People’s Front (BPF), Nancy Marin said today that the Opposition UDP’s self-destruction is dangerous for democracy in Belize.

“It’s a sad day for Belize. Not because of Patrick … Noone is secure in the UDP. The opposition is completely broken and this means a broken Democracy for our Country,” Marin posted to Facebook.

During an interview with BBN, Marin stated that while the third parties must mobilize, they must also be aware of the fact that having no opposition in the country is dangerous for Belize since the ruling party (PUP) has the power to change the laws.

“The country is heading toward a dangerous slope. I am very concerned about what this means for governance in Belize because giving the PUP this amount of power is very dangerous for governance. With the opposition destroying themselves — nepotism and corruption can continue without any proper checks and balances in place,” Marin said.

Marin noted that the ruling government can change laws and the constitution if there is no viable opposition in the country.

“Not even the PUP should be happy because corruption can get out of hand and the PUP can also self-destruct because of the same power that the UDP was given. Belize needs the 3^rd parties and this is a cry to strengthen democracy. To have a strong opposition, we have to look at the third parties. It is alarming that while we try to strengthen democracy, corruption can continue because of the power that is being given to them (government),” Marin asserted.

Marin affirmed that many members of the UDP have reached out to her expressing interest in joining the 3^rd parties movement.
