Tropical depression forms in the Caribbean Sea

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) informed this morning that a tropical depression formed over the Central Caribbean Sea.

As of this morning, Tropical Depression 9 was located about 615 miles East southeast of Kingston, Jamaica.

The depression is moving toward the west-northwest near 13 mph (20 km/h).

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts.

Tropical Depression 9 is expected to produce heavy rainfall and instances of flash flooding and possible mudslides in areas of higher terrain in Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao. Heavy rains are also likely to spread into Jamaica and the Cayman Islands in the coming days.

The depression is expected to approach Jamaica and the Cayman islands as an intensifying tropical storm, the NHC noted.
