“BDF Captian Damacio Coc showed no signs of being suicidal,” says prison CEO

By Benjamin Flowers: Damacio Coc, the 33-year-old Belize Defence Force Captain who committed suicide at the Belize Central Prison earlier today appeared of sound mind up to the time of his death, Prison CEO Virgilio Murillo told Breaking Belize News on Sunday.

Coc was found in his cell within the Tango 10 section of the facility earlier, having taken his own life. The guards who were conducting routine checks rushed him to the prison doctor, but he had already died by that time.

Murillo said that the situation is regrettable, as with all loss of life, but was difficult to avoid given that Coc had been through several wellness checks without alerting anyone of what he was planning.

“He didn’t seem suicidal, even up to this morning,” Murillo said. “We have systems in place when they are displaying suicidal tendencies, but if he appeared to be calm and composed, it’s hard to determine what is their next move.”

Coc had been in prison since August 25 on a charge of breaching a restraining order. He was awaiting a bail hearing.
