Tropical Storm Ian Forecast To Rapidly Intensify To A Hurricane Today

Posted: Sunday, September 25, 2022. 6:49 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: “Tropical Storm Ian is about to undergo explosive intensification into a major hurricane in the western Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, a danger to the Cayman Islands, western Cuba, and Florida in the coming days,” the Weather Channel is reporting.

This morning, the National Hurricane Center said that Tropical Storm Ian still had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and was located about 320 miles south-southeast of Grand Cayman and 590 miles southeast of the western top of Cuba.

The storm was moving to the west-northwest at 12 mph.

A hurricane warning is in effect for Grand Cayman and a hurricane watch is in effect for parts of Cuba.

“Ian is expected to become a hurricane later today or tonight and reach major hurricane strength by late Monday or Monday night before it reaches western Cuba,” the NHC said.

Jamaica and the Cayman Islands could receive anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of rain while Cuba could see 4 to 8 inches, the NHC forecasted.
