By Aaron Humes: The murder of Jeffrey Allen Coats, 42, is the second in less than a week in the San Ignacio area, following Matthew Smith of Belize City on Independence Day following the local ceremony.

Smith was stabbed to death and one person has been charged.

After a recent low of three murders in August, six have so far been officially reported in September, not including the deaths of Philip Palma and Allen Martinez which have not been officially classified.

Ramon Espat was ambushed on September 3 in Orange Walk Town, while in the south Ernesto Blanco was allegedly killed by Elias Pacheco over jealousy and someone left Independence waitress Marcelina Makin lying dead on top of a tomb in the village cemetery.

Smith’s murder occurred the same day as that of Bernard Timmons, a librarian from Belize City who was chopped to the neck from behind while watching the Orange Walk Carnival.

The unofficial national total for murder is presently 80, 82 if the deaths of Palma and Martinez are counted. Palma’s body was discovered days after he went missing with various wounds on an uninhabited island while Martinez’s was recovered along the John Smith Link Road.

Police continue to set a target for a sub-100 year for murders, which would be Belize’s first since 2013.
