By Benjamin Flowers: As the hijab protests in Iran mark its 10th night, more than 40 protestors have been reportedly killed by authorities, Reuters reports.

Iran’s President, Ebrahim Raisi, said on Saturday that the government would listen to those who have valid concerns, but that the chaos brought on by the protests must be stopped.

He went on to say that Iran will “deal decisively with those who oppose the country’s security and tranquillity.”

The protests stem from the death of 22-year-old Masa Amini, who died under questionable circumstances after being detained by Iran’s Morality Police, for wearing her hijab too loosely.

In the aftermath of Amini’s death, thousands have taken to the streets in protest, with women burning their hijabs and even cutting their hair short. The Iranian government has since held its own pro-hijab protests as a means of showing that there are many who still uphold Iran’s conservative views.

In another move to cripple protesters’ ability to organize the Iranian government cut access to the internet, a move which is being circumvented through intervention by the United States. Despite having sanctions on Iran, the US Treasury Department on Friday issued guidance expanding the range of internet services available to Iranians.

Space X CEO Elon Musk, also said that he would activate the firm’s satellite internet service, Starlink, to allow Iranians internet access. The Treasury said that Space X would have to write to the treasury for an exemption to do so, given the sanctions; however, with the situation evolving in Iran as it is, the writing may be only a formality.
