PM Briceno addresses the United Nations: “The world is suffering from the three C’s: COVID, Climate, and Conflict”

By Benjamin Flowers: Prime Minister John Briceno’s address to the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 77) was a reflection of pertinent issues affecting the world, and a call to action for developed nations.

Briceno took to the podium on Friday, September 23, stressing that he was far more pessimistic this year than he was at the last assembly because of unfulfilled promises by developed countries. Those unfulfilled promises coincide with major global events causing strains on developed and developing countries alike.

“Our current systems and institutions conceived for world war II recovery are straining under the weight of today’s crisis. In truth, they are broken and stand impotent in the face of the three C’s: COVID, Climate, and Conflict. And yes, our people and planet are paying the price”, Briceno said.

He said that the current state of play in the world puts the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)s,17 global targets to increase the quality of life around the world developed by the UN in 2012, at risk of not being fulfilled.

Briceno stated that addressing the problems would take a “bold reimagining of the global financial architecture,” where systems proven to be ineffective are abandoned and replaced with creative new solutions that deliver results.

He also stressed that the G20 nations need to be accountable and consistent with commitments to support developing nations, as anything less would ensure the failure of developing countries to cope with the three C’s crisis.
