Police stick with suicide theory in death of Belize Defence Force Captain Damacio Coc

By Aaron Humes: Today, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Fitzroy Yearwood said the Department awaits the result of a post-mortem examination in the death of Belize Defence Force Captain Damacio Coc, found hanging in his cell at the Belize Central Prison on Sunday afternoon.

ASP Yearwood said he would not discuss the incident further out of respect to Captain Coc’s family and friends who have maintained he could not have possibly wanted to end his own life. He had been on remand pending a bail hearing for alleged breach of a protection order.

However, a Police report states that a note was found inside the prison cell and there was a reported confrontation hours before Captain Coc’s death.

Prison Director Virginio Murillo has told us the prisoner showed no signs of wanting to end his life.

Investigations continue pending the examination.
