International News: National Security Agency Whistleblower, Edward Snowden granted Russian citizenship

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor, Edward Snowden who spoke out against U.S. surveillance programs has been granted Russian citizenship, LatinPost reports.

Russian President, Vladimir Putin signed a decree covering 72 foreigners including Snowden.

Snowden is a former NSA contractor who released information regarding U.S. surveillance programs, then fled the U.S. to avoid prosecution.

He is still wanted in Washington on espionage charges.

Snowden considers himself a whistleblower and received permanent residency in Russia in 2020.

U.S. officials are yet to comment on Snowden gaining Russian citizenship.
