Posted: Tuesday, September 27, 2022. 6:34 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: This week, PathLight Belize, an NGO working in Belize since 2007 to assist with national development through the advancement of education, signed a cooperation agreement with the Organization of American States.

The agreement was signed in Washington, D.C. on Monday, by Adele Catzim-Sanchez, CEO of PathLight Belize, and Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the OAS and is said to provide a framework for PathLight to collaborate with the OAS and the Government of Belize in achieving the sustainable development goals through education.

“Specific areas of cooperation include access to new technologies in education, the digital education agenda, professional development, and teacher training. This allows PathLight to scale up its current teacher training and student after-school programs,” Pathlight Belize said in a statement following the signing.

The organization also noted that OAS’s Teacher Education Platform, its professional development certification and degree programs, its leadership development, entrepreneurship, and digital innovation initiatives offer Belize new opportunities for engaging in human capital development.

Prime Minister John Briceno was present at the signing, which PathLight Belize also said shows the Government of Belize’s Commitment to building public-private partnerships to advance education initiatives in Belize.

Notably, PathLight Belize is currently supporting national development through education by providing full scholarships and a comprehensive wrap-around afterschool program to 228 students attending secondary and tertiary education institutions.

The organization is also engaged in training secondary school teachers in competency-based learning methodologies, particularly, problem/project-based learning (PBL) which will allow for the smooth transition to the implementation of the new national education curriculum which focuses on building seven key competencies among students.
