United Democratic Party marks 49th anniversary

By Aaron Humes: While it is on “hard times” at the moment, the United Democratic Party (UDP) is marking its 49th anniversary of formation on this day in 1973.

The UDP will be having giveaways and guest appearances on its radio and television station WAVE all day.

The Party was formed from a merger of several opposition parties ahead of the 1974 general election, in which it won six seats.

After a slight step back in 1979, the Party swept to power for the first time on an expanded constituency map in 1984 and alternated time in government with the People’s United Party ever since, including three consecutive terms under Dean Barrow between 2008 and 2020.

The Party is now being led by Barrow’s son Moses “Shyne” Barrow and has been steadily trying to maintain its voice as the chief opposition to the PUP.
