United States thanks Belize for maintaining strong ties with Taiwan

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, September 26, 2022, Belize’s Prime Minister John Briceno met with U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken in Washington.

Blinken said that the U.S. “appreciates so much Belize’s strong voice on global issues, including, for example, on the Russian aggression against Ukraine, as well as its strong ties to Taiwan,”

Prime Minister Briceno stated that the US and Belize have enjoyed strong and warm relations over the last 41 years.

During a recorded address commemorating Belize’s Independence at a ceremony in Taipei on September 13, PM Briceno said that “this year’s September Celebrations theme which was: Valiant and bold, proud and strong! Belize rebounds at 41′ speak to the resilience of our people and our ability to stand united and undaunted despite the challenges we face,” which he added, “is a quality we share with our friends in Taiwan.”

PM Briceno reiterated that Belize stands in solidarity with Taiwan.

Taiwan and Belize established diplomatic relations in 1989 and have enjoyed strong bilateral relations since then.
