By Aaron Humes: Issues in the sugar and banana industries led to decreased production, hurting the overall results for the primary sector of gross domestic product.

While GDP rose 13 percent in the second quarter (April to June) and 11 percent year-on-year, agriculture’s share was just 7.8 percent, down from 9.6 percent.

793 thousand tons of sugar were produced in the second quarter and about 100 thousand tons of stand-over cane was left in the field by SIB estimates.

Both citrus and livestock production rose, although there was less production of the latter for export compared to the high point of 2021 when more than 9 thousand heads were exported.

Poultry production rose 1.5 million to nearly 12 million pounds, but the avian influenza issue may depress production in the third quarter.

All marine production rose except for shrimp which fell 22 percent, the industry only just coming back online after a disease infestation.
