By Aaron Humes: Increases in fuel and food prices continue to drive inflation.

The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) measured a six percent increase in all categories of the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Transport prices rose 19 percent, fueled – literally – by increases in fuel prices, with average prices up by one to two dollars in the last year and an average of four to five dollars since 2017.

Food prices rose more than six percent, particularly in meats, cooking oil, and some vegetables. There has been a general upward trend in prices since 2017 and particularly since April 2020.

Price increases were also recorded for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) (24.9 percent), cost of materials, and maintenance.
