By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On September 28, 2022, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology (MoECST) handed over 52 Chromebooks and 2 laptops to Excelsior High School in Belize City.
The devices, which will be gifted to second, third, and fourth formers, were allocated through a donation made to the Ministry in March 2022 by the non-profit organization, Build Belize Inc.
The donation complements the technological and device distribution goals of the Ministry’s Education Upliftment Pilot Project: Together We Rise, of which Excelsior High School is a participating institution.
“Chromebooks, which make up most of the devices in the donation, are a new type of computer designed to get things done faster and easier. They run Chrome OS, an operating system that has cloud storage, the best of Google built-in, and multiple layers of security. This type of device is ideal for schools where students already have access to a Google account through their institution,” the Ministry noted.
Minister of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology, Francis Fonseca reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the holistic needs of Excelsior High School and addressing the technological needs of students throughout the education system.
He expressed gratitude to Build Belize Inc. and the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations for their efforts in realizing this donation and called on students to make the most of both this donation and their opportunities to be in school.
Build Belize Inc. aims to empower and improve the lives of Belizeans through education, health, and community service.
Kalia Brandon, Build Belize Inc. representative, expressed that the hope is that the devices will be maintained and that the students will “pay it forward” in service to their community.
