“Not tenable” for importers to continue buying from National Gas Company Limited

Posted: Thursday, September 29, 2022. 6:07 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: It remains an unfair competition for her clients to essentially be forced to rely on National Gas Company Limited for their product, attorney Audrey Matura Shepherd said today.

Not only does the NGCL have the sole license and therefore ability to import, the prices are government-controlled and the NGCL can also distribute via retail, meaning they have a hand at every stage of the process.

Matura Shepherd said that contrary to then-Acting Chief Justice Michelle Arana’s beliefs, expert testimony established it is not as cost-effective to build a second terminal to hold up to 1.5 million US gallons of LPG. And before the current regime, the prices for import were on the whole far lower than they are now considering trucking and other costs.

Ultimately, even as both sides mull an appeal, Matura Shepherd says Belizeans must raise their voices on the issue since as she also pointed out, both major parties have skin in the NGCL game.

Lead counsel for the former importers is Senior Counsel Douglas Mendes, joined by Jose Alpuche.
