By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Every October, people around the world show their support for everyone affected by breast cancer.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins on October 1st giving an opportunity for the annual campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer and fund research into its causes, treatment, and cure.
Statistics show that in 2020, breast cancer became the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in less developed countries and the second leading cause of cancer death in American women.
In 2020, more than 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide and 685,000 died, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) reports.
In addition, the BCRF says that overall, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women.
Early signs of breast cancer can be a lump in a breast, a painful breast or armpit, or a discharge from the nipple. A medical professional would perform a manual exam and send you for a mammogram. A mammogram examination is painless and only takes about ten minutes.
If you’ve never had a mammogram, make an appointment during breast cancer awareness month 2022.
