By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) are warning that Hurricane Ian is accelerating toward South Carolina with life-threatening storm surges and damaging winds.
On the forecast track, the center of Ian will reach the coast of South Carolina today, and then move farther inland across eastern South Carolina and central North Carolina tonight and Saturday.
Maximum sustained winds remain near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher gusts.
Ian should maintain about the same strength before landfall later, then weaken and rapidly transition into a post-tropical cyclone overnight. Ian should dissipate over western North Carolina or Virginia late Saturday, the NHC said.
The combination of storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline.
Locally considerable flash, urban, and small stream flooding is possible today into early Saturday across portions of northwest North Carolina and southwest Virginia.
