San Pedro cops found guilty for manslaughter of man badly beaten while in their custody

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Three San Pedro police officers have been found guilty of manslaughter in the beating death of Edwin Ixpatec.

Today, Romelio Logan, Reydel Teck, and Jashimir Cobb were all found guilty in the Supreme Court before Justice Ricardo O’Neal Sandcroft.

The trio was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until November 9, which has been set for their sentencing hearing.

On March 14, 2016, the three officers responded to a call of a man being drunk and disorderly in the water in front of a resort. The officers reportedly took Ixpatec to the station where witnesses say they beat him up and even hit him repeatedly with a baton.

The next morning, Ixpatec was found unresponsive on the cell block and was rushed to the San Pedro Polyclinic for treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was airlifted to Belize City where he had to undergo a craniotomy, a surgery to remove a portion of the skull.

Ixpatec later died of his injuries.
