By Aaron Humes: Last year, the holiday formerly known as Columbus Day and Pan American Day was taken off the list by Government order, only to since be restored.
The holiday, now known as Indigenous People’s Resistance Day, will be celebrated this weekend on Monday, October 10, in lieu of Wednesday, October 12, creating a three-day weekend.
At the time of the announcement of the name change, Minister responsible for holidays Kareem Musa stated, “Аll оf Саbіnеt, unаnіmоuѕlу, аgrееd thаt thе рrореr nаmе fоr Осtоbеr twelfth ѕhоuld bе Іndіgеnоuѕ Реорlе’ѕ Rеѕіѕtаnсе Dау, tо асknоwlеdgе, tо rесоgnіzе thе ѕurvіvаl, thе ѕtrugglе, аnd thе rеѕіѕtаnсе оf іndіgеnоuѕ реорlе іn Веlіzе, іn раrtісulаr thе Мауаѕ.”
As for remaining holidays this year, November 19, Garifuna Settlement Day, falls on a Saturday and will be observed on that day, meaning no three-day weekend.
The Christmas holidays are Sunday, December 25, and Monday, December 26 (Boxing Day), with New Year’s Day the following Sunday.
