Mexican President: Government does not spy on journalists or opponents

Posted: Tuesday, October 4, 2022. 10:33 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador says that his administration does not spy on journalists or opponents.

On Sunday, a report found that phones belonging to 2 journalists and a human rights defender were infected with Pegasus, which belongs to Israeli spyware firm NSO Group, between 2019 and 2021, Reuters report.

The spyware, which can be used to remotely break into phones, providing access to their memory or turning them into recording devices, is typically only sold to governments and law enforcement.

Lopez Obrador said that the reports that Government is spying on journalists were untrue.

“It’s not true that journalists or opponents are spied on,” Lopez Obrador stated.

The report says that Pegasus spyware attacks in Mexico continued under Lopez Obrador.

When he took office in 2018, Lopez Obrador pledged to halt the use of the technology after a scandal erupted around its use during the presidency of his predecessor.
