Ministry of Economic Development Champions the Introduction of Science and Technology to Rural Farmers

Posted: Tuesday, October 4, 2022. 3:30 pm CST.

Contributed by the Ministry of Economic Development: Today, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed for the continuation of Component One of the Resilient Rural Belize (RRB) program in the City of Belmopan, between the Ministry of Economic Development by its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Osmond Martinez and the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Valentino Shal. Witnessing the signing of this MOA was also the RRB Programme Manager, Dr. Geraldo Flowers, and the National Coordinator for the Rural Development Department, Ms. Elsa Cardinez.

The purpose of the MOA is for both ministries to engage in collaborative actions together with the RRB, aimed at increasing access to irrigation services to support rural-small farmers. For the remainder of the fiscal year 2022, this agreement will allow seven (7) farming cooperatives to have access to geophysical resistivity testing, drilling, and the construction of water wells by the Ministry of Rural Transformation; the first being constructed in November, with plans to increase this number in the upcoming fiscal year.

The farming cooperatives for which the irrigation wells will be constructed are in the following communities of Belize:
• Concepción Village, Corozal District
• Xiabe Village, Corozal District
• Seven Miles El Progresso Village, Cayo District
• Trio Village, Toledo District
• San Jose Village, Toledo District
• Cow Pen Village, Stann Creek District
• Maskall Village, Belize District

The Government of Belize is committed to its mandate of #planBelize and acknowledges programs such as the RRB and its importance in minimizing the impact of climate change and to increase economic activities on smallholder farmers, while supporting sustainable market access for their produce.
