Several government offices without security earlier today as SOS workers protest unpaid wages

Posted: Tuesday, October 4, 2022. 2:47 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A number of government offices had little to no security this morning after their assigned security guards either walked off the job or failed to show up at all due to an ongoing protest against Security Oriented Services (SOS) Limited.

Reports are that the guards, whose salary was already three days late, learned that they would again not be paid today, prompting them to take action.

A number of government offices including the Registry Department, Magistrate’s Court, and Supreme Court, were momentarily left without guards due to the employee protest. At the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, a single guard showed up; however, that posting is usually covered by two guards.

Sources say that the owner of the security company turned to former employees that had recently quit, to fill the spaces that were left vacant this morning.

Our newsroom spoke with a number of employees from the company, who explained that they are outraged because they had recently been paid only half of their salary with the promise that the other half would be forthcoming. The workers say that adding to the outrage are allegations that Social Security had not been paid for them for a number of years.

Within the past two-four weeks, nine employees have reportedly quit their jobs at the security firm.

This is a developing story.
