By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A visiting Brazilian expert will be holding a soursop workshop at Central Farm on Thursday, said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
“Well renowned soursop expect Dr. Abel Reboucas will be sharing his knowledge with us,” said Barry Palacio, MAFSE’s National Coordinator for Non-Traditional Fruit Trees at MAFSE.
Dr. Reboucas is a Brazilian agronomist who holds a Doctorate degree in Tropical Fruits from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. His concentration is on citrus, mangoes, passion fruit, soursop, papaya, avocado, and coconuts.
The visit by Dr. Reboucas was facilitated through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Barry Palacio said the workshop, which will focus on pests and diseases that affect soursop plus pruning and hand pollination, is in compliance with the Agriculture Ministry’s outreach to support the soursop industry in Belize.
“We have about 400 acres of soursop and growing as farmers are planting more and more,” said Barry Palacio about Belize’s soursop industry.
The workshops will be held in Central Farm on Thursday, October 6, for Cayo farmers; on Friday October 7 at Yo Creek and a local farm for Orange Walk and Corozal farmers; on Saturday, October 8 at the Ayinha Farm in Lemonal for Belize District farmers; and Monday, October 10, (even though it’s a holiday) at Stann Creek Agriculture Station at Nine Miles on the Stann Creek Valley Road for Stann Creek and Toledo farmers.
Dr. Reboucas already conducted a three-day Training of Trainers Workshop last week for Technical Officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, the private sector, and agriculture stakeholders.
