NEMO on full alert, says storm 13 targeting Central America, Belize

Posted: Thursday, October 6, 2022. 1:52 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A first national advisory on potential Tropical Cyclone 13 has been issued by the National Meteorological Service of Belize and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), which forecast it to begin affecting Belize late on Sunday into the holiday Monday.

On its present track, the storm is most likely to make landfall in Nicaragua and Honduras, weakening rapidly as it moves ashore; however, there is a chance the center of the storm could move further northward and strengthen to hurricane status, likely hitting Belize by Monday. As of 1 p.m., the cyclone has top winds of 35 miles per hour and is located near 11.5 North Latitude and 67.7 West Longitude or just north of Venezuela and moving westward at 15 miles per hour.

In any event, Belize is in for heavy rainfall and flooding, especially in the south as the system strengthens over the southwestern Caribbean Sea. By Friday it is expected to be south of Haiti, by Saturday it is expected to be south of Jamaica, by Sunday morning it is expected to be over Nicaragua and Honduras, and by Monday it is likely to be in front of or over Belize. Rainfall amounts are likely to peak on Monday with daily totals of about 4 to 6 inches or higher. Rain is expected before the system reaches our region so flooding could occur before it makes landfall.

NEMO, therefore, advises to begin reviewing emergency plans, not to travel this holiday weekend unless necessary, for fishers to remain in port, consider evacuating in flood-prone areas (switch off the main electric and water sources when you leave and avoid unnecessary actions such as walking over driving through flood waters.

NEMO advises that it is on full alert, as all national city and district committees including the Red Cross are meeting today and tomorrow, Friday.
