Regional police body brings attention to attacks on police officers

Posted: Thursday, October 6, 2022. 3:36 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: According to the Caribbean Federation of Police Welfare Associations (CFPWA), there has been an increase in attacks on police officers while performing their lawful duties in several Caribbean territories.

The CFPWA says it is monitoring reports in St Lucia, Jamaica, the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands, some of which have left members of the respective police forces seriously injured and others killed.

The Association states, “It is our members who stand as a buffer between the law-abiding citizens and the criminals in our society. We recognize the extremely challenging and dangerous environment in which our police officers must operate, yet our members continue to give selfless service for the betterment of the region. We condemn these preposterous acts of violence and brazen attacks on our officers.”

In pursuit of the safety and security of the territories in which they serve, the CFPWA “strongly supports the use of “justifiable force to protect themselves and the lives of law-abiding citizens throughout the region:” “We want to remind our members that self-preservation comes first. The CFPWA would like to encourage all of our police organizations and governments to establish a legal defense fund to assist our officers if charges are brought against them during the lawful execution of their duties and deadly force is used.”

The CFPWA also calls on governments and police-related organizations to ensure that officers are covered by insurance and have proper protective gear on duty and a variety of lethal and non-lethal weapons and body-worn cameras to record incidents and encounters.
