By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Should Tropical Storm Julia’s trajectory and projections continue being the same, according to the United States National Hurricane Center (US NHC), Belize could experience tropical storm force winds on Sunday.
However, the National Meteorological Service of Belize says they have no data that Belize will experience tropical storm-force winds on Sunday.
The US NHC said at 9:00 am on Friday, that Tropical Storm Julia is expected to strengthen and become a hurricane by Saturday evening as it moves over the southwestern Caribbean Sea.
“A Hurricane Warning is now in effect for San Andres, Providencia, and Santa Catalina Islands,” said the US NHC. Those islands are part of Colombia where the government instituted a hurricane watch as well.
“A Hurricane Watch is also now in effect for much of the Nicaragua coast. Hurricane-force winds and a dangerous storm surge are expected in areas where the core of the system crosses the islands and moves onshore.”
The US National Hurricane Center said flash flooding may occur on Friday over portions of the Guajira Peninsula.
“The potential for life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides is expected to spread to portions of Central America this weekend,” said the US NHC.
