By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) held three training sessions for Orange Walk farmers on Friday at the Yo Creek Agriculture Station.

MAFSE said the first two sessions focused on helping farmers in finding their own substitutes for fertilizers and other inputs to assist plant growth.

The third training session concentrated on soursop maintenance and propagation. This was the second of four training workshops MAFSE, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is conducting countrywide from Thursday to Monday.

“One workshop focused on making bio-fertilizer, while another taught farmers from Santa Martha to make bokashi, a composting method that requires only about 10 days to convert organic materials into useable material, and the nutrient value of the material is among the highest of any method of composting,” said MAFSE.

“When farmers make their own bio-fertilizer from ordinary household materials, they save money in buying inputs that are imported. In today’s economy imports are sky-high in price due to factors beyond our control.”

The Agriculture Ministry said that the first two workshops have been conducted in other districts as they continue assisting farmers with “strategies to help them maximize their production and minimize costs, and to find alternative crops for domestic and export markets.” Hence, the push for crops like coconuts, soursop, and pitahaya, to name a few.
