Tropical Storm Julia strengthening over Caribbean Sea, could strike Nicaragua as a hurricane

Posted: Saturday, October 8, 2022. 6:24 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: On Friday Tropical Storm Julia formed near the coast of Colombia.

According to meteorologists at AccuWeather, the storm could rapidly strengthen into a hurricane over the Caribbean Sea prior to slamming the coast of Nicaragua with life-threatening impacts this weekend.

“As of 5 a.m. EDT Saturday, Julia was moving toward the west at 18 mph with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. Julia was located 230 miles to the east of Isla de Providencia, Colombia, ” meteorologists at AccuWeather said.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted that hurricane watches and warnings were in effect for parts of Nicaragua and the offshore islands of Colombia. This includes a hurricane warning that extends from Nicaragua’s northeastern coastal city of Puerto Cabezas that extends southward to Pearl Lagoon, as well as one in effect for Colombia’s San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina Islands.

Mark Mancuso, a senior on-air meteorologist at AccuWeather said that as the system moves westward and into the open waters of the southwestern Caribbean today, it could quickly ramp up into a hurricane.

“While not imminently likely, there is some chance that Julia is able to intensify more rapidly than expected on Saturday and reach Category 2 strength on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. A Category 2 hurricane has maximum sustained winds of 96-110 mph.”

The NHC is warning that Julia can bring life-threatening flash floods and mudslides to Central America due to the heavy rains this weekend.

“Maximum sustained winds are near 60 mph with higher gusts. Steady to rapid strengthening is forecast while Julia moves across the southwestern Caribbean Sea today and tonight, and the system is expected to become a hurricane later today. Rapid weakening is forecast after Julia moves inland on Sunday, and it is likely to become a remnant low on Monday.”

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles from the center.
