By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says that Julia has strengthened into a hurricane as it approaches the coast of Nicaragua.
Life-threatening flash floods and mudslides are possible from heavy rains over Central America through early next week, the NHC noted.
On the forecast track, the center of Julia is expected to reach the coast of Nicaragua overnight, move across Nicaragua on Sunday, and then move near or along the Pacific coasts of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala through Monday.
Julia is a powerful Category 1 Hurricane with 75 miles per hour and higher gusts.
Strengthening is forecast until landfall in Nicaragua and Julia is then expected to weaken after making landfall.
The National Meteorological Service of Belize is closely monitoring Hurricane Julia which is expected to produce heavy rainfall and possible flooding over Belize for tomorrow into Monday.
A flood warning is in effect for low-lying and flood prone areas in Belize.
