By Breaking Belize News Staff: Early Sunday morning, Hurricane Julia made landfall in Nicaragua.
Meteorologists at AccuWeather warned that life-threatening impacts are expected in Nicaragua and throughout much of Central America with flooding rain expected to fall, even in locations well away from the coast.
“As of 3:15 a.m. EDT Sunday, the time of landfall, Julia was moving toward the west at 16 mph with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, making it a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Julia’s center was located near Pearl Lagoon, Nicaragua,” Meteorologists at AccuWeather said.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted that hurricane watches and warnings are in effect for parts of Nicaragua and the offshore islands of Colombia.
The NHC said that Hurricane Julia is expected to move across Nicaragua on Sunday before traveling near or along the Pacific coasts of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala through Monday.
“Additional weakening is expected today as Julia moves over Nicaragua, but it is still forecast to be a tropical storm when it emerges off the Pacific coast of Nicaragua by tonight. Julia is forecast to weaken to a tropical depression on Monday night and dissipate by Tuesday,” the NHC stated.
Hurricane Julia’s arrival in Central America comes less than two weeks after Hurricane Ian crashed into the state of Florida, in one of the deadliest US hurricanes on record.
Yesterday evening, the National Meteorological Service of Belize said that they are closely monitoring Hurricane Julia and that the system is expected to produce heavy rainfall and possible flooding over Belize from today into Monday.
