By Breaking Belize News Staff: A man already serving five years at the Belize Central Prison for a burglary conviction, got his time extended by six years after being convicted for two other offenses.
Rosendo Nunez changed his not guilty plea for the August 3, 2021 burglary of Juanita’s Outlet on Albert Street, Belize City, to guilty moments before his trial was to begin, after finding out that police had an overwhelming amount of evidence against him.
Police reportedly had surveillance footage that positively identified him as the burglar as well as the testimony of people he had sold stolen items to, and one person who he had asked to secure a stolen item for him.
Nunez also pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods in relation to a vehicle that was stolen from Dangriga, which he said was given to him by the man who actually stole it. This claim was made allegedly because police were on his trail and he didn’t want to be linked to the vehicle.
Nunez pleaded with the court to have mercy on him and consider that he was already serving five years. The Chief Magistrate sentenced him to five years for the burglary and one year for the handling stolen goods charge. Then it was explained to him that the sentences would run consecutively, meaning that they would not start counting until he has served out his current five-year prison term.
Since Nunez only just began his first sentence in August, he is looking at a release date sometime in 2033.
