Ministry of Agriculture postpones soursop cultivation workshop planned for Stann Creek on Monday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) has postponed the soursop cultivation workshop planned for farmers from the Stann Creek and Toledo Districts on Monday.

 

Taking advantage of the visit of Brazilian expert Dr Raul Reboucas, brought in by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, MAFSE was to conduct the final of four workshops on Monday, October 10, despite it being a national holiday, at the Stann Creek Agriculture Station at Nine Miles on the Stann Creek Valley Road for 20 Stann Creek and Toledo farmers, but the inclement weather caused by Tropical Storm Julia forced its postponement.

 

The Brazilian agronomist who holds a doctorate degree on Tropical Fruits from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, has so far reached approximately 115 farmers in workshops from Thursday to Saturday. 

 

According to Barry Palacio, MAFSE’s National Coordinator for Non-Traditional Fruit Trees at MAFSE, Reboucas successfully conducted three workshops at Central Farm for Cayo farmers on Thursday, at Yo Creek for Orange Walk and Corozal farmers on Friday, and at the Ayinha Farm in Lemonal for Belize District farmers on Saturday. Prior to these farmers’ workshops, Reboucas conducted a training of trainers’ workshop for technicians in the Ministry of Agriculture and partner organizations.

 

Palacio said the workshop for the southern farmers will be held at a later date with local expertise.
