Over 50 high school students in Mexico poisoned by mysterious substance

Posted: Sunday, October 9, 2022. 6:20 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: At least 57 students in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas were hospitalized last week after being poisoned by an unknown substance.

USNews reports that the mass poisoning occurred on Friday, October 7 in the rural community of Bochil. Students were rushed to the local hospital where most cases were managed, though some were later transferred to another hospital in the state capital due to the severity of their condition.

Conflicting reports began to surface on local and social media following the incident with some claiming the students had engaged in drug use, while others speculated that they consumed contaminated food or water. More than 15 students have already been screened for illicit drugs but their toxicology reports came back negative; following allegations that the students had been using cocaine.

Local and state authorities are reportedly collaborating on an investigation; however, to date, no conclusive cause of the incident has been revealed.

Notably, this is the third mass poisoning incident in Mexico reported since September 23.
