Residents of Lake I report damages to rooftops and power lines down after heavy rains and thunderstorms

Posted: Sunday, October 9, 2022. 6:35 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: As a result of activity associated with former Hurricane Julia, residents of parts of Southside Belize City have been taking to social media to document the damage.

According to entertainer Ernestine Carballo, “roofs are gone, fences are gone, the lines are down” in the McKay Boulevard area of Lake Independence after what she described as “tornado”-force winds.

Along the George Price Highway at Mile 2.5, cable wires are reported down due to strong winds that “felt like hurricane winds” according to one commenter. (Julia was a Category 1 hurricane at landfall Saturday night but has since been downgraded to tropical storm status.)

The damage is not limited to Belize City as residents of Placencia and Hopkins report flooding and high wind and rain.

Belizeans are encouraged to bunker down tonight and tomorrow as wind, rain and storm will continue for most of the day, though decreasing in intensity according to the National Meteorological Service.

The hotline number to reach the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) for assistance is 936.
