Salvadoran Government declares National Emergency and National Day of Prayer as Hurricane Julia approaches

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Government of El Salvador has declared a State of National Emergency in preparation for Hurricane Julia.

President Nayib Bukele also declared today as a National Day of Prayer.

President Bukele requested that all Salvadorans joined in a moment of prayer and ask for God’s protection and security for all Salvadorans. 

“The entire force of the State remains vigilant to attend to the possible emergencies that this cyclonic event leaves in the country. And although we have prepared ourselves, all Salvadorans are invited to join in prayer and ask for God’s protection,” a statement from the Presidential office said.

The National Hurricane Center noted that a tropical storm warning is in effect for the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador.

A tropical storm watch is in effect for the Pacific coast of Guatemala.

Category 1 Hurricane Julia is expected to continue moving over Nicaragua today and emerge off the Pacific coast by this evening.

Julia is then expected to move very near to and parallel to the Pacific coasts of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala tonight and Monday.

The NHC notes that Julia is expected to be a tropical storm when it moves near the Pacific coasts of Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador tonight and Monday.  

Julia is expected to dissipate near the coast of Guatemala by Monday night.
