By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Landslides and river floods in Venezuela have claimed 25 lives and 52 are missing, according to Venzuelan newspaper El Nacional. Other sources claim 55 are missing.
The Venezuelan media outlet said on Sunday that Twitter users reported that heavy rains in central Venezuela, particularly the state of Aragua, had caused several landslides and river floodings in the areas of Choroní and Ocumare de la Costa. The landslides closed roads and the flooding of five streams had caused major damage in Las Tejerías killing 25, including two children, and disappearing more than 52 people.
Photographs published on Twitter showed that a mountain gave way on the road to Choroní impeding the flow of traffic.
Twitter users also reported that the access road to the city of Maracay remained closed on Sunday morning.
The government sent heavy machinery to clear the roads and maintenance and cleaning up crews to the devastated areas, president Nicolás Maduro said on Twitter.
The number of dead due to heavy rains over the last few weeks is now at 43 according to regional and national organizations, said El Nacional.
