By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Macal River has flooded, and its waters are now by San Ignacio Welcome Center.

About three hours ago the Macal River was just above the low-lying wooden bridge that connects Santa Elena and San Ignacio in the Cayo District. Just after 2:00 pm the water was already at the verandah where the concrete words SAN IGNACIO announce that you’re entering San Ignacio. A few minutes later the water was already at the San Ignacio Market and by 3:00 pm it had crossed over to the San Ignacio Welcome Center.

The Macal River is a very fast rising river and on occasion has reached as far as Burns Avenue, downtown San Ignacio.

Market vendors, store owners, and people who live in the area have been moving their personal belongings to higher ground. News out of Cayo is that market vendors are not being allowed by the market anymore.
