By Benjamin Flowers: The Belmopan City Council and the Belmopan Emergency Management Organization (BEMO) are monitoring key areas in Belmopan for flooding as inclement weather continues to affect the country.
Deputy Mayor Nikki Augustine explained that the council and BEMO are currently conducting assessments in flood-prone areas and will be keeping residents informed of any developments.
“We remain on high alert and on standby for Rivera, J&W, Maya Mopan, and other areas. If you live near low-lying or river areas don’t wait til it’s too late to move to higher grounds and save your lives.
Col. Castellanos is the Belmopan NEMO Coordinator and can be reached at 614-5891 if you need help,” Augustine said. “Be safe everyone and try to be your brother’s/ sister’s keeper. If you don’t have to go outside then stay indoors. Remember that strong flash flooding can sweep people and vehicles away.”
Due to the torrential rains brought on by Tropical Depression Julia, which made landfall in Nicaragua as a Category 1 Hurricane yesterday, several areas within the Cayo District have reported flooding since this morning.
Areas in southern Belize have been reporting flooding since yesterday.
