Spillways activate at all three dams in Cayo district due to Tropical Storm Julia; Residents warned to watch out for rising river levels

Posted: Monday, October 10, 2022. 9:41 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Today Fortis Belize (formerly BECOL) warned the public that river levels downstream in the Cayo district will be rising considerably due to heavy rains brought to the region by Tropical Storm Julia.

Fortis explained that the torrential rainfall over the past two days brought on by the storm have activated the spillways of the Challilo, Vaca, and Mollejon dams.

“This flow coming over the spillways, along with natural runoff and flooding of other tributaries, will contribute to a significant rise in the river levels in downstream communities, therefore vigilance is advised,” Fortis said.

Fortis went on to say that it is monitoring water levels at all facilities and will continue to provide updates to relevant authorities and the public.
