By Breaking Belize News Staff: Tropical storm Julia emerged over the Eastern Pacific yesterday evening after slamming Nicaragua with rain and winds that damaged hundreds of homes.
According to government officials in Nicaragua, no casualties have been reported; however, 13,000 families had to evacuate while more than 800 houses had been flooded and many roofs had been damaged.
Nicaragua’s weather agency said that the maximum sustained winds were estimated at 85 miles per hour when the storm made landfall near the Laguna de Perlas area.
Vice President of Nicaragua, Rosario Murillo told the local media that about one million residents of Nicaragua’s coastal region lost power and internet due to fallen lines and the government’s decision to cut electricity for safety reasons.
In Columbia, Julia had left “light damage” in San Andres and Providencia, Colombian islands off the coast of Nicaragua, according to Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
Guatemala President Alejandro Giammattei said in a news conference yesterday evening that Julia had already resulted in three floods and one bridge collapse. At the same time, authorities in Honduras declared a red alert and called on residents to evacuate.
In El Salvador, President Nayib Bukele declared a day of “National Day of Prayer” yesterday and called on citizens to “come together to pray and ask for God’s protection.”
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) stated that heavy rainfall with a risk of life-threatening flash floods and mudslides would continue across Central America and southern Mexico through Tuesday.
Julia’s arrival in Central America comes less than two weeks after Hurricane Ian slammed the US state of Florida as one of the most dangerous US hurricanes on record.
