By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Though the waters of the Macal River have not totally receded, San Ignacio-Santa Elena is trying to get back to normal after the flooding that affected the twin-town on Monday. The Town Council advised businesses, residents, and market vendors to evacuate the area by the Welcome Center and the San Ignacio Market. But some people didn’t pay heed to the Town Council’s advice and reacted too late.

“It was a little chaotic yesterday. Some people had losses because they didn’t listen to the advice. Some people like to leave things for the last minute and when the water began to rise so rapidly, they couldn’t get all their things out, so some of the freezers got wet,” said Mayor Trapp.

Mayor Trapp said he was trying to help some get their freezers out and mentioned that a Bowen and Bowen truck that was retrieving a freezer shut down in the water and had to be pushed out.

“When they wait until the last minute, it’s so difficult to get everything out and then they begin to panic and they put other people’s lives at risk,” he said.

Mayor Trapp said they also put people’s health at risk, mentioning that several people with boots still got wet because the water was so deep.

Water rose yesterday and reached as far as the back of Bismillah’s Store past the San Ignacio-Santa Elena Welcome Center, even flooding the Norman Broaster Stadium, and forcing the San Ignacio Market vendor and business owners in the area to move out their goods and close shop. The market vendors, according to Mayor Trapp, were moved to the Falcon Field and remained there on Tuesday. The business owners still haven’t been able to reopen.
